MUMBAI, India – Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan is developing a new game show aimed at young people of Indian origin. Tentatively titled How Indian Are You?, the format will be a general knowledge quiz show to determine which contestant is the Most Indian of Them All. Mr. Bachchan will produce the gameshow with BIG Synergy, the company behind the super hit, Kaun Banega Crorepati.
“The Indian Diaspora is incredibly diverse,” said Mr. Bachchan. “Indian people are found all over the world, on every continent except Antarctica, which is just too damn cold and has terrible cellular service. But the struggles of being Indian are the same no matter where you are, whether it’s South Africa, the UK, Australia or Fayetteville, Arkansas.”
Then Mr. Bachchan told us what inspired him to create the show: “I was watching Bend It Like Beckham for the 14th time. And the scene where Jesminder’s mom goes “You won’t even learn to cook dal!” is really the turning point of the film. But I started thinking whether it was true or not. What makes someone a proper Indian? Do you really need to know how to cook dal? What if you only know how to cook aloo gobi – does that make you less of an Indian?”
Mr. Bachchan could not divulge too much about the show but noted a few of the questions and challenges that contestants would have to face: “Only answering questions is boring. Plus we are so, so good at memorizing things. Thus the show will be a combination of questions and activities. Questions like Who is Dilip Kumar? or What food is known as the vegetarian’s meat?”
“But I am most excited about the activities,” said Mr. Bachchan.”In the best reality shows the contestants are always doing something. These activities will change from show to show so contestants will not be able to practice in advance. We will have them cook dal, eat with only their hands or try to do a proper Indian head shake.”
Mr. Bachchan also noted that the show’s penalty system will be different. “We won’t be penalizing people for not getting the right answer or overcooking rice. But we will definitely penalize contestants for having Western first names. If a contestant has a Western name like Lisa or Aaron they will immediately start with -500 points.”
